Milone & MacBroom, Inc. is currently mid-way through construction inspection on a water supply reservoir dredging project in Wallingford, Connecticut. Mackenzie Reservoir has a surface area of 53.8 acres and a capacity of approximately 160 million gallons.
Approximately 130,000 cubic yards of deposited sediment is being removed from the reservoir to restore storage capacity, remove excessive in-water vegetation, deepen water levels to discourage excessive algae growth, and improve water quality to ensure the long-term viability of the reservoir as a high quality drinking water supply.
Prior to the construction effort, Milone & MacBroom performed field assessments, bathymetric survey, sediment analysis, local, state, and federal regulatory permitting, and engineering design of the improvements. Bid documents were developed by MMI leading to the successful public bidding of the project in late 2008.
The unusually rainy summer of 2009 posed a challenge relative to water control; however, MMI worked with the contractor and the town to respond to field conditions and the project is running on schedule and within budget. Construction is expected to be completed in 2010, following a brief winter shut-down.
